Beginning students are prospective students who have applied for the first semester of an academic program at Universität Hamburg and who have not yet studied at a university.
The most important application requirement for beginning students is the German "Abitur" or equivalent university entrance qualification.
For students with a foreign university entrance qualification there are additional information about applying.

Applicants to an advanced semester are already studying or have studied in the same or related bachelor's program and they would like to transer their credits in order continue their studies at Universität Hamburg.
Applications for an advanced semester can be submitted for the second through the penultimate semester of a standard period of study.

If you have completed foundation courses at another university in a Diplom, Magister or academic program concluding with a state exam, you can transfer to an advanced program at Universität Hamburg. This is limited to the (few) academic programs in which the final degree has not yet been converted to the new bachelor/master's system.

The consecutive master's programs at Universität Hamburg build upon bachelor's programs and generally last between two and four semesters. Non-consecutive master's programs do not build upon previous bachelor's programs although their requirements and quality correspond to those of the consecutive master's programs.
Exact application requirements for a master's program at Universität Hamburg depend upon the program you wish to apply to.

Students who pursue doctoral studies at Universität Hamburg matriculate as doctoral candidates.If you are enroling for the first time or simply advancing from one degree program to a doctoral program, you gain or retain student status accordingly.
To enrol as a doctoral student or to advance from a previous program to a doctoral program, an applicant must have a university degree (Magister, exam, seminary/theological degree, Diplom, state exam).

Universität Hamburg offers interested and talented high-school students an opportunity to attend introductory seminars and lectures on a regular basis alongside their schooling.
Applications must be submitted to the school's management, which must informally authorize a junior studies program.
