Admission for individuals with professional experience

In accordance with § 38 of the Hamburg Higher Education Law (HmbHG), working men and women can be admitted to the Universität Hamburg without an Abitur:

  • Entrance Exam: If you do not have a university entrance qualification but believe that you could pursue university studies based on your professional activities and qualifications, an entrance exam will permit you to study certain subjects. Participation in the entrance exam does not require a connection between the subject of choice and your professional activities.

You can find more thorough and detailed information about university admissions for working men and women in this PDF file (German only).

The entrance examination is given annually. The application deadline is generally between 1 February and 1 March.

Special Case: Socioeconomics

The Department of Economics and Politics has its own admission procedures for working men and women in the subject of  Socioeconomics as well as other application periods.
