You are fascinated by the process of European integration and the way it holds fascination for other regions in the world? Do you wish to deepen your understanding of this process and be actively involved in it? You aspire to a career in which well-grounded legal, economic and political science knowledge about European integration is indispensable? You have already completed your first degree preferably in the area of law, economics or political science with an outstanding result?

Admission Requirements

  • A university degree with a grade above average, preferably in law, in economics or in political science representing a total of 240 credit points (CP) according to the ECTS. Applicants who have earned their first degree qualifying for a professional career representing a total of 180 CP must compensate for the missing 60 CP by a good performance in additional or practical training programmes in fields similar to those of the Master Programme. Proof of this may be submitted in form of professional experience, further studies, research activities, publications and the like.
  • Very good English language proficiency and very good German language proficiency if the student does not wish to study the entire programme in English exclusively.

Objectives

The Master Programme is designed for highly qualified graduates from all over the world who aspire for a position in the EU institutions, International Organisations, national administrations or enterprises and law firms.
Based on highest academic standards the students will be provided with in-depth knowledge about the European Union, the functioning of its economy and its role in the world. The Master programme’s special feature consists of an interdisciplinary approach combining law, economics and political science.
Participation in the Master Programme leads to the award of one of two academic titles

  • Master of Arts (M.A.)
  • Master of Laws (LL.M.)

Curriculum

The curriculum consists of a basic programme covering the foundations of the European Union as a legal, economic and political community, as well as an elective programme allowing students to specialise in one of the four areas: “The EU as a Political Actor”, “External Relations of the EU”, “Companies as Economic Actors” and “Law of the EU”.

Structure

Organised by the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg, the School of Law and the School of Business, Economics and Social Sciences.

Duration

Ten months (October to July).

Practical Experience

  • Practical modules at EU institutions, in the diplomatic office of the Federal Foreign Office, in the business sector, in federal or state ministries and in other institutions.
  • One-week excursion to European institutions in Luxembourg (Court of Justice of the European Union), Brussels (European Commission, Council of the European Union and European Parliament) and Strasbourg (Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights).

Language

The Master Programme is primarily run in English, in parts also in German as a secondary course language. It is however possible to study the entire programme in English.

Tuition Fees

8,500 Euros. Prospective students should apply to the appropriate institutions for stipends to help cover tuition fees and/or basic living expenses. The Europa-Kolleg has only limited funds at its disposal for students from Central and Eastern Europe. These are granted by private and public sponsors.
