The TestAS academic aptitude test

The TestAS is a central, standardized academic aptitude test for foreign students from non-EU countries who would like to begin their first academic program (first semester) at a German university. TestAS results provide information about your status compared to other applicants.

The academic aptitude test is given in DaF test centers in Germany and other countries and can be taken in either German or English. If you are already in Hamburg, you can take the TestAS in four test centers.

The test is comprised of a general and a subject-specific section. Test modules must correspond to your desired subject in order for the results of the subject-specific section to be considered valid by Universität Hamburg:

TestAS subject module Subject at Universität Hamburg

Significance of TestAS at Universität Hamburg

Participatin in the TestAS at Universität Hamburg is voluntary. As an applicant, you can decide whether or not to submit your test results to the university. The test is advantageous, however, for the following reasons:

  • With a TestAS certificate, applicants to a foundation program at Universität Hamburg receive two bonus points regardless of their test results
  • If applicants have received over 100 points on the test, you can acquire an additional 14 points (a maximum of seven points for the core test and the subject specific section each), thereby significantly improving your chances of acceptance to Universität Hamburg.

Participation in the TestAs plays a particularly important role when applying for subjects with an admission restriction. This is true, as well, for teaching subjects in teaching degree programs as well as for minors with an admission restriction. If you are applying for a major without an admission restriction and a minor with an admissions restricution, it may still be worth taking the subject-specific section of the test corresponding to your choice of minor.
