Preparatory Pre-Semester for International Students

The preparatory pre-semester in Hamburg

Since summer semester 2005, Universität Hamburg (UHH), Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) and the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH) have offered a preparatory pre-semester course for all foreign applicants. This course is offered by the Studienkolleg. It provides subject-related preparation and takes place every summer semester.

The goal of this pre-semester course is to prepare future students so that they are able pursue their studies successfully and without losing time.

Why do we recommend that international first-semester students attend this pre-semester?

Many things at a German university are different from home: academic organization and methods, technical language, academic techniques. A few years ago, the bachelor-master degree system was implemented. Bachelor's programs do not permit much time for orientation and require students to be well prepared for their studies.

The preparatory pre-semester course helps you prepare for both subject-related and linguistic demands (German and English) and introduces you to the German academic system and its academic methods.

If you are starting a bachelor's program in winter semester, you can use the summer semester to prepare.

There is a personal advising session. Instructors answer potential questions, take care of problems and assist you. There are special opportunities for participants at each of the universities.

We are delighted when prospective students take advantage of these opportunities and invite you to apply. If you have questions about applying, please contact one of the contacts at the respective university (below). If you have questions regarding the content of the Studienkolleg, we also ask you to contact the appropriate person below.

Applying, proving language skills, exams

Who can attend a preparatory pre-semester course?

The preparatory pre-semester course targets all foreign applicants who want to begin their first semester in Hamburg. They can attend if they fulfill the requirements for university study in Germany and apply punctually for a program offering a preparatory pre-semester course.

Applicants who can already hand in a German language certificate (e.g. DSH 1, DSD 1, C1, TestDaF with at least TDN 3 in each section) along with the application documents are likely to be exempted from the German language entrance exam at the Studienkolleg. In cases of doubt the Studienkolleg will make a decision based on the documents that have been sent in for the application.

How do I apply?

If you want to attend a preparatory pre-semester course in a summer semester, you need to apply to the respective university by 15 January of the same year.

Please note that Universität Hamburg requires transcripts of records to be reviewed by the university's Service Office for International University Applications (uni-assist) prior to application and for a fee. Since applications are only accepted if they have undergone review by uni-assist, you should apply for review a month before the application deadline at the latest.

You can find precise information about applying on the universities' respective websites:

Is there a selection process?

Yes. Due to limited spaces, there is a selection process based on qualitative criteria.

How much does the pre-semester course cost?

Participants in the preparatory pre-semester course are enrolled students and pay the respective university's current semester fee. They receive a student ID and a semester ticket for Hamburg's public transportation system.

Participants in a preparatory pre-semester course do not, however, have to pay tuition fees nor is the semester counted towards the regular standard period of study. There is a small fee for copies and books used in the course.

Can I take a German language exam during the preparatory pre-semester course?

Yes. Those participants who have not yet passed the TestDaF with the grade minimum required by the respective university or who cannot submit equivalent proof of language skills can take a German language exam at the Studienkolleg in August. Passing grades qualify you for academic study.

Since German lessons throughout the preparatory pre-semester course are not sufficient to help you pass exams, students generally need to attend another language course in July/August to help them prepare for exams. This has a fee obligation.
