If you would like some insight into our work and the problems facing students who have turned to Psychological Counselling, you can listen to this radio report:

Psychological Counselling

During their studies, many students go through difficult phases or suffer from acute stress or crisis situations which they can't always master on their own. According to a study by the German Student Services, 16% of students need professional help during their studies.

The counselling team

At the Central Office of Academic Advising and Psychological Counselling, psychotherapists work with a diverse spectrum of psychotherapeutic methods. They are intimately familiar with the problems facing students and with general questions of academic advising due to their long-term experience at Universität Hamburg.

Psychological counselling as we understand it is not based on the assumption of illness; it seeks, rather, to orient and support students in finding solutions to current or long-term problems.

Our services

Students can turn to us for all study-related difficulties and personal concerns which affect their studies, e.g.:

  • Study and work difficulties
  • Fear of writing or speaking or test anxiety
  • Questions and crises related to choosing a subject
  • Identity and orientation concerns
  • Relationship, partner and familial problems
  • Loneliness and difficulties with social contact
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Addiction risk (self-assessment tests)

The Central Office of Academic Advising and Psychological Counselling cannot offer long-term psychotherapy, but most students seeking help can find solutions in one to six individual sessions. If necessary, we recommend attending one of our seminars or seeking futher help within or outside the university.

We do, however, advise you on all questions related to ambulant psychotherapy and, if desired, we help you to find the right psychotherapist. You can find more information about psychotherapy/finding a therapist on the Internet pages of the Hamburg Chamber of Psychotherapists and the Psychotherapy Information Service of the Professional Association of German Psychologists.

Registration

Our service spectrum targets students of Universität Hamburg, the College of Music and Theater and the College of the Visual Arts. The other Hamburg universities provide their own counselling services.

Registration for psychological counselling should be done in writing by using our registration form, which you can pick up and submit during Academic Advising's open office hours in Alsterterrasse 1. You can also send the application by mail. You can also contact us by telephone at 42838 - 7181 or by email. Generally, we offer an appointment within two or three weeks. We will inform you of the appointment by mail or email.

Naturally, registration and counselling sessions are confidential both within and outside the university. All staff members are sworn to confidentiality.
