Part-time study

In accordance with § 8 of the matriculation regulations of Universität Hamburg, students who can prove that there are justifiable reasons for an inability to devote to full-time study but who can devote half of their time to studying can matriculate as part-time students upon application.

Besides providing justifiable reasons, students must confirm that university exam regulations permit part-time study for the academic program in question. With a few exceptions (e.g. law), this possibility is permitted in bachelor and master programs only.

Generally, according to university exam regulations, due dates and deadlines are extended such that a normal semester corresponsds to two part-time semesters. Details can be found in the respective subject's exam regulations.

Reasons for part-time study

  • Employment with regular working hours of at least 15 hours per week; (proof: e.g. a confirmation from your employer)
  • Child-care (under 18 years old) or nursing care for other relatives (proof: e.g. birth certificate, registration certificate)
  • Disability or chronic illness which limits ability to study such that full-time study is impossible (proof: medical evaluation)

Before you submit your application, please read the Information about changing student status".

Submitting your application

You can submit your application informally but in writing to Service for Students, along with your matriculation application or re-registration (i.e. at least 14 days prior to payment of your semester fee). You can also submit your application online using STiNE. In any case, you must submit copies of proofs (see examples above). Permission is granted for the two subsequent semesters.

If you do not submit a subsequent application once these two semesters are over, normal re-registration is required once your semester fee is paid. A new application is only possible for the following re-registration period.

If your reason for part-time study is no longer valid, you must inform us immediately. If you fail to do so, your matriculation as a part-time student will be retroactively invalidated.

Application deadlines

Applications for part-time study must be submitted upon matriculation and together with your matriculation application or when you re-register (i.e. at least 14 days before payment of your semester and tuition fees). Late applications can only be considered for the following semester.

Part-time study and semester fees / tuition fees

Even if you are studying part-time, you must pay the semester fee in full. Please pay this fee at the earliest 14 days before you submit your application for part-time study and at the latest following permission to study part-time.

If you are studying part-time, your tuition fee id reduced (375.00 euros) by half; this means that, in addition to your semester fee, you need to pay tuition fees of 187.5 euros during your authorized part-time studies.

Exceptions

Part-time study is not possible (see above: requirements) if university exam regulations do not permit, i.e. currently, and with few exceptions (e.g. law), it is only possible to apply for part-time study in bachelor and master's programs.
