Review of Career Day 2009:
On Friday, 20 Nov. 2009, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., our Career Day 2009 took place with the motto "From the University to a Career: One day on career orientation and career planning."

At first, it was just an idea. It then became a remarkable architectural pilot project in the spectrum of national career services: on 20 November, Universität Hamburg's Career Center hosted the first "Career Day: From the University to a Career" as a follow-up event to the annual graduate day. The event took place in the Career Center's own offices with approximately 230 guests, 12 business representatives and 20 discussion leaders from diverse branches, all on 280 square meters!

Career Day targeted students and graduates of all disciplines who would soon be entering professional life or had just started working.

After the head of the Career Center, Frauke Narjes, gave her welcome speech, "Career Management: Labyrinth or French Park," showing how differently career paths are structured (or not structured!), participants headed into two seminar rooms, five larger and smaller offices and in the Career Center's beautiful winter garden for discussions with businesses, talks and a review of application documents.

Helpful rooms…
The business discussions each lasted 45 minutes and had a small number of participants (3 to 8 people) and 1 to 2 business representatives. This provided insight into the respective business culture and the chances of getting a foothold without creating a tense interview situation. All business discussions were held in the Career Center's offices. A high degree of individuality and intimacy was created by having "visitors" from a business meet with a small group in one of our offices.

Discussions focused on various topics related to starting a career and professional life. In some cases, discussions were initiated by a lecture, in others by a panel of experts and practictioners with a moderator. Here, as well, attendence befitting the space created a pleasant discussion atmosphere.

Between talks, there were opportunities to network over coffee, tea, cookies and fruit in the large kitchen (the "party principle" was a great success) as well as to ask questions or just relax.

Career Day was based on a spatial concept to facilitate a high degree of individual contact without the pressures of a recruitment procedure. It's particular charm lay in the high degree of individuality created not least by the rooms provided.

We would like to thank everyone involved for the success of this day!
