University Council


The University Council of the University of Hamburg has, in addition to its chairperson, eight honorary members - four appointed by the Academic Senate of the University and four by the Senate of the City of Hamburg. The University of Hamburg and the Office of Science and Health work in close cooperation to fill these positions. The members then elect a ninth member and determine who is to be the chairperson. The committee's main task is the strategic management of the university. Besides electing the president and chancellor, other important duties include approving the budget as well as receiving the annual report of the presidium.

On April 8, 2008, at its first meeting of its second term, the University Council elected physisist and Director of the German Electron Synchrotron (DESY) Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Albrecht Wagner as chairperson. Maria von Welser has been elected as deputy chairperson.

The Council members appointed by the University of Hamburg are Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Rüdiger Wolfrum, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Vice President of the Max Planck Society, President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in Hamburg and, since 2002, honorary professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Hamburg; Prof. Dr. Günter Huber, internationally renowned laser physisist at the University of Hamburg's Institute of Laser Physics and Fellow of the Optical Society of America; Prof. Dr. Ursula Platzer, University Clinic Eppendorf, Director at the Center for Dental and Oral Medicine; and Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Wahlster, Professor of Informatics at the University of the Saarland and Head of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence in Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern, Bremen und Berlin. He is the winner of the Federal President's German Future Award and a member of the Research Union of the federal government.

The members appointed by the Hamburg Senate are Maria von Welser, former Director of the NDR Landesfunkhauses in Hamburg; Johann C. Lindenberg, former Chairperson of the Board of Unilever Deutschland GmbH and Chairperson of the State Board of Trustees Hamburg/Schleswig Holstein of the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft;  and Prof. Dr. Dr.h.c. Erika Fischer-Lichte, who teaches Theater Studies at the Free University of Berlin with numerous guest professorships in the USA and Japan.  She was also a member of the German Science Council and of the Senate and Central Committee of the German Research Foundation.
