State Excellence Initiative (LExI)
With the State Excellence Initiative, Hamburg's Office for Science and Research seeks to quickly identify outstanding areas of research in Hamburg universities and to introduce these to duly interregional supporters such as the German Research Foundation or the EU. The main objective is to create an advantageous basis for applications in the second round of the Federal and State Excellence Initiative. The goal is to acquire funding in the national competition or alternative external funding from interregional supporters by the end of 2012.
The State Excellence Initiative and the Academic Foundation target the funding of excellent basic research with a concentration on research in projects (excellence clusters) or on the structured training of young scholars and scientists (graduate schools).
You can find more information on the
background and
funding decisions on the pages of the Office for Science and Research.
Universität Hamburg was able to acquire funding for a total of 11 projects, including 6 state clusters of excellence and 5 state graduate schools. The fundamentally interdisciplinary projects have been planned for a period of 3.5 years. They will be funded until the end of 2010 by the State Excellence Initiative; funding from the Academic Foundation should follow until 2012. Within this period, the participating scientists and scholars will prepare for the next round of the Excellence Initiative or external funding.
