On 19 October 2007 the Universität Hamburg succeeded in the second round of the Excellence Initiative with its proposal for a Cluster of Excellence devoted to climate research. Together with its external partners, the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology, the GKSS Research Centre and the German High Performance Computing Centre for Climate- and Earth System Research, and further co-operating institutions (the German Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, the German Weather Service and the Federal Waterways Engineering and Research Institute), the University will be able to expand its Centre for Marine and Climate Research to form the "KlimaCampus Hamburg", a national centre of excellence in climate research.
