Many new students' dream subject turns out to be a nightmare. All too often, prospective students enter university with a skewed picture of their chosen subject as well as of their own abilities. Self-assessment tests provide orientation. In the Network of North German Universities(Nordverbund), SelfAssessmentsare being developed so that prospective students can pinpoint their interests and test their suitabilty.

The on-line portal of the Nordbund offers tests for subjects in the cultural and social sciences, law and economics, languages and natural sciences. The tests are web-based and take 90 minutes. At the end of each test, there is an individual assessment of the prospective student's interests and abilities and the extent to which they meet the requirements of a given subject. The assessment is not, however, a substitute for consultation with an academic advisor. It simply forms the basis for a thorough conversation in the Office of Academic Advising at the University of Hamburg.
