There are various ways of covering living expenses whilst working on a doctorate. Many doctoral students work at a university or an external research institution, or they hold scholarships.
Universities employ doctoral students as research or teaching assistants in an established post or in projects funded externally through major funding bodies, such as the German Research Foundation (DFG), or a private-sector business.
The four external research institutions, which encompass numerous smaller scientific and academic institutions, are the Helmholtz Association of Research Centers, the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft.
Scholarships
Universität Hamburg supports its young scientists and scholars with
state graduate scholarships and travel bursaries funded by the
University.
Scholarships granted for doctoral programs offer further integrated funding opportunities, for example research training groups funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Current job offers or fellowships are posted on the homepages of the individual institutions.
The
GEPRIS databank provides an overview of all current projects funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The breadth of scholarships on offer throughout Germany is largely influenced by the twelve
organizations for the promotion of young talent (Begabtenförderungswerke) funded through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
