Promoting and actively supporting knowledge and technology transfer are two important, sustainable objectives of Universität Hamburg. For more than 30 years, the central service institution "Office of Knowledge and Technology Transfer" (AWiTT) has acted as a mediator between academia and the economic sector. Since 2006, it has been supported by the Hamburg Innovation GmbH (HI).
The AWiTT's services aim above all to promote application-oriented research and knowledge-based services, thereby promoting cooperation with the economic sector, patents and new businesses generated by university research.
The following services by Universität Hamburg are intended to promote exchange between partners in and outside of the university:
- Publishing and maintenaning an online service catalogue
for all schools and research areas
- Compiling further information on research and development projects
- Forwarding queries from the economic sector and disseminating information about technological offers in the form of new research and development findings, procedural developments, technical solutions as well as practical services
- Supporting efforts to make contact to businesses, recommending scientists as speakers, evaluators and consultants
- Advising cooperative projects and supervising ongoing cooperative projects
- Initiating networks and coordinating joint projects with the businesses, public institutions and other institutions
- Supporting scientists who participate in trade fairs, organize special seminars, tour institutions and take part in corporate discussions
- Providing information to and supporting entrepreneurs, providing informating about funding programs, finding premises and facilities, equipement and other infrastructural necessities for new businesses
- Supporting scientisits in legal protection and patent registration affairs, general advising on economic value of research and development findings, advising on the modalities of patent registration
